BEVERLY — Shannon Zofkie, 22, of Beverly has been named the 2017 South Side Irish St. Patrick's Day Parade Queen.

Zofkie is an alumna of Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School in Mount Greenwood. She is currently a senior at St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind.

Sixteen candidates took part in the competition that was decided Saturday at the annual pre-parade fundraiser at 115 Bourbon Street in suburban Merrionette Park.

Zofkie will be featured in South Side Irish St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 12 as well as the events leading up to the march down Western Avenue. The parade begins at noon on 103rd Street in Beverly and travels south to 115th Street in Morgan Park.

Zofkie also will be featured in the Downtown St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 11.

The parade's organizing committee also pays for Zofkie to compete in the Chicago Rose of Tralee. Zofkie will enter the pageant April 8 as the "South Side Irish Rose." The winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to Ireland to compete in the international contest during a two-night televised event in Tralee, Ireland.
