DOWNTOWN — An 18-year-old Roosevelt University student was raped Friday in the school's high-rise dorm in the Loop, police and the school say.

The 18-year-old woman was attending a "social gathering" at 3 a.m. Friday in the residence hall at 425 S. Wabash Ave. when she was sexually assaulted, police said.

The victim knew the suspect, who has since been banned from campus, police and the school say.

No arrests have been made yet. Police say they're still investigating.

"We have not yet received the official police report," said Laura Janota, a Roosevelt spokeswoman. "The incident is under investigation and has been reported. We are taking appropriate response measures."

Janota said a federal Title IX investigation also is underway.

Hailey Johnson, a junior psychology student at Roosevelt, used to live in the building. She said she believes the rape was the first reported on campus since she began attending the school three years ago.

Guests of the distinctive residence hall — a fixture in Chicago's skyline — must pass security and show a student ID or guest pass to gain access to its upper floors.

"It's definitely alarming," Johnson said of the crime.

Rape on college campuses has become an increasingly visible issue that's drawn the attention of former Vice President Joe Biden among others. A  2015 study found that 15 percent of female college freshmen are raped while incapacitated by drugs or alcohol.
