CHICAGO — Police are expanding crime-preventative technology on the South and West sides.
The Deering and Austin districts will receive Strategic Decision Support Centers, crime cameras, new cellphone technology and ShotSpotter systems that listen for gunshots, according to a city news release.
That technology has been used in the Englewood and Harrison districts to help prevent and analyze crime, the city said.
The tools should "help police get ahead of crime and prevent violence from happening in the first place," the city said.
The technology will be implemented in the districts in the coming weeks, the city said.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Supt. Eddie Johnson were expected to announce the expansion of the program at a 1 p.m. Tuesday news conference in Bridgeport.
