MORGAN PARK — Chicago Police issued an alert after a series of catalytic converter thefts in Beverly and Morgan Park.

Eleven vehicles were damaged in the latest spree, which occurred between 3-6 a.m. Tuesday and 3-6 a.m. Wednesday. The thefts occurred in the area bounded by Western and Talman avenues and 103rd and 119th streets.

Police said catalytic converter thieves typically double park on the street and then crawl under a parked vehicle and cut off the converter using a power saw.

The thieves want the precious metals inside the converters, which can pocket them around $100 to $150 each at scrap yards or on the black market.

The thieves in Beverly and Morgan Park targeted Honda CRVs, Ford Escapes and other small- to mid-range SUVs, police said. Such vehicles are easy prey as they sit high off the ground and are easier to get under.

Police said victims observed a man in a dark SUV on Feb. 14 and a man in a Ford Mustang on Feb. 15.

They are advising area residents to be on the lookout for people loitering overnight. And anyone with more information is asked to call detectives at 312-747-8273.
