WICKER PARK — Lace up your walking shoes and join Shakespeare District police officers in walking Wicker Park's streets early Wednesday evening.
The walk, to begin in the 1600 block of North Milwaukee Avenue at the North and Damen intersection, is scheduled for 5:15 to 6:15 p.m.
"Please join us for a walk to empower residents by gathering together to create a safe and welcoming environment in beat 1424," the community policing office said in a flier.
Beat 1424 is bordered by North Avenue on the north, Division Street on the south, Wood Street on the east and Western Avenue on the west. The busy beat includes the neighborhood's namesake park just south of the intersection and many bars and restaurants.
Last week, at a special public safety meeting, more than 400 residents packed a school auditorium. But some said they left the gathering unsatisfied without assurances that police would boost foot and bike patrols on The 606 elevated park system, or bring back a dedicated detail that patrolled the area's bar and late-night entertainment district.
Later in the evening Wednesday, there is a Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) Beat 1434 meeting set for 6:30 p.m. at the Bucktown-Wicker Park library, 1701 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Beat 1434 is a bordered by Armitage Avenue on the north, North Avenue on the south, Wood Street on the east, and Rockwell Street on the west.
On Thursday, there is a meeting for Noble Square "Beat 1433" at 6:30 p.m. in the Pulaski Park Field House, 1419 W. Blackhawk St.
Beat 1433 is bordered by Wood Street to the west, the Chicago River to the east, Division Street to the south and Armitage Avenue to the north.
