AUBURN GRESHAM — Leo High School students are opening up their annual blood drive to the community for the first time Wednesday.

It'll be from 2-6 p.m. at the school, 7901 S. Sangamon Ave. The school has partnered with Heartland Blood Centers and is looking for alumni and former and current family members to donate blood.

Principal Shaka Rawls said the drive is  an effort to present a counternarrative to the stories about blood being spilled on the South Side of Chicago.

"It is time to show that there are young men — socially conscious, learned and nonviolent young men — on the South Side of Chicago," he said. "Young men who realize that our community is disproportionately affected by violence and that our blood will hopefully save a life in our community. Young men that know, that the fight to save lives starts with those who are affected most— us."
