LINCOLN PARK — A Wrightwood Avenue mansion constructed "by a prominent builder for himself" with no shortcuts is listed for nearly $5 million.

The listing went up last week with Berkshire Hathaway, calling the residence at 1259 W. Wrightwood Ave. an "extraordinary custom home constructed with unparalleled craftsmanship and detail by a prominent builder for himself." The asking price was $4,995,000.

Although there is a virtual tour online, the listing insists prospective buyers "must see to believe," with a grand entry hall, elliptical staircase, a chef's kitchen, a "master wing" with a spa bathroom and walk-in double shower and a barrel-vaulted penthouse.

It has three bedrooms, four full bathrooms and two half bathrooms and a total of 7,600 square feet.

Calling it "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, a work of art built with few constraints or inhibitions, liberally taking advantage of grand spaces, the finest imported materials and the unbridled ingenuity of its designers," the listing said it's "where fantasy meets reality."

"When you create a custom home and you don't spare any expense," real estate agent Brad Lippitz said, "you create a work of art, which is what it is."

The sellers are Jeff Grinspoon and Jon Foley, who had it built in 2003 by Kingsley + Ginnodo Architects.
