CHICAGO — The death of a 2-month-old girl who died Thursday has been ruled a homicide, and the  Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has launched an investigation, officials said.

The infant, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner as Aliya Acosta, was pronounced dead at 2:04 a.m. Thursday. She died from multiple injuries due to child abuse, the medical examiner said.

At 4 p.m. Jan. 17, the baby was at home in the 3500 block of West Pierce Avenue when she became unresponsive and family members took her to St. Mary's Hospital, police said. She was transferred to Lurie Children's Hospital later that day.

The Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the baby's mother, father and other caregivers for allegations of abuse, a spokeswoman said.

The investigation was pending and DCFS has not had contact with the family before.
