LINCOLN PARK — Social studies gets the science-fair approach with an open house Thursday at Lincoln Park High School.

The school holds its annual Social Science Fair from 4:15-6 p.m. Thursday in the Freshman Building on campus at 2001 N. Orchard St.

"We would like to make the community aware of what we do, and more importantly, we would like for the students and their hard work to be recognized as much as possible," said Carolyn Latshaw, who teaches in the Social Science Department at the school. "Many of the students and classes spend weeks on the project, while other students have been working independently on their projects since October."

According to Latshaw, many students in history, psychology, law and other classes seize on Chicago subjects for their projects, which can take the form of essays, exhibits, performances, documentaries, websites and other presentations.

The event will find exhibits, papers and websites on display in the gym, psychology presentations from 4:15-4:45 p.m. in Room 172 and documentaries shown over the course of the open house in the cafeteria, including a live performance at 4:40 p.m.

Latshaw said many of the projects will be entered in upcoming competitions aligned with the Chicago Metro History Fair and National History Day. According to Latshaw, Lincoln Park High typically has "the largest number of students advance to the state competition in Springfield" from Chicago Public Schools, with some advancing to the national competition in Washington, D.C.
