UPTOWN — Chicago Public Schools has moved to freeze nearly $500,000 from school budgets in Uptown, with Brennemann Elementary School losing the biggest slice of its original budget.
Across the city, the mid-year budget cuts, which were announced to fill a $215 million gap left by Gov. Bruce Rauner's veto of the funds officials were counting on, totaled $46 million.
In a letter to Chicago parents on Rauner's letterhead and signed by Illinois Education Secretary Beth Purvis, the governor called the cuts "curiously timed and unfortunate."
Locally, that means six Uptown schools will see cuts of a total of $470,377.
Brennemann, 4251 N. Clarendon Ave., will lose $104,227, or 2.2 percent of its original budget of $4,740,466. While that's the largest percentage-wise, it isn't the biggest total cut in sheer dollars in the neighborhood.
Disney Magnet Elementary School, 4140 N. Marine Dr., will lose $150,247 from its original budget of $11,483,236. That represents a 1.3-percent difference.
Uplift High School, 900 W. Wilson Ave., suffered the second biggest cut at 1.6 percent. It will slash $60,430 from its original budget of $3,774,280.
Here's how other schools in the area fared:
McCutcheon Elementary School, 4865 N. Sheridan Road.: $50,901 (1.01 percent)
Goudy Elementary School, 5120 N. Winthrop Ave.: $41,964 (0.68 percent)
Courtenay Elementary School, 4420 N. Beacon St.: $62,608 (o.96 percent)
