GOLD COAST — A man was detained by police Tuesday after crashing recess at a Gold Coast elementary school and "battering" students, police and the school said.

The man, who has not been named because charges are still pending, at 11 a.m. Tuesday entered the playground of Ogden International School's east campus, 24 W. Walton St., and got in an "altercation" with three students, Ogden principal Michael Beyer said in an email to parents Tuesday afternoon.

The man was stopped by recess monitors and escorted off school grounds by security, who called police, Beyer said. No students were seriously injured during the altercation, Beyer said.

The victims were treated at the school for minor injuries, Officer Michael Carroll, a Chicago police spokesman, said in an email.

Charges against the man, who is not believed to be connected to anyone at the school, are still pending because police are still investigating the incident, Carroll said.

Beyer assured parents in his email that monitors will be stationed at the school's playground during recess, and for now, parents and other visitors aren't allowed in the playground during recess hours.

"Our goal remains to provide all students with a safe, positive learning environment where they can reach their full potential," Beyer wrote. "I thank you for your support, and encourage you to contact me directly with any questions or concerns."

Ogden's east campus hosts students in kindergarten through fifth grade. School administrators referred further questions to Chicago Public Schools, who did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
