EDGEWATER — Graffiti depicting a message of "hate" was found inside a Loyola University dorm just north of the Granville Red Line station over the weekend, according to the school.

The school did not say what the contents of the message were, but that it was discovered sometime between Friday and Saturday just outside a student's dorm at Spring Hill Hall, 6211 N. Winthrop Ave.

"Loyola does not tolerate hate in any form or any manner on its campuses, and Campus Safety takes all reports of hate crimes seriously," Ed Mirabelli, deputy chief of Campus Safety, wrote to students in an online crime alert regarding the incident.

Illinois law in part defines a hate crime as a crime motivated "by reason of the actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, or national origin."

The school is asking anyone with information to contact Campus Safety at 773-508-6039. Reports can also be filed anonymously online and at 855-603-6988.
