MORGAN PARK — A GoFundMe effort has been launched to buy new chairs for the pool deck at Kennedy Park.

The Kennedy Park Advisory Council hopes to raise $7,000 to buy 20 lounge chairs and 20 beach chairs for the pool at 11320 S. Western Ave. in Morgan Park. The online fundraiser runs through March 15.

“People are spending more time at Kennedy Park pool with friends and neighbors, due to the revamped pool schedule and extended pool season," said Carly Carney, president of the group behind the fundraiser.

The advisory council was formed last fall with the mission of advocating for park improvements. The deterioration of the roughly 12 chairs that were provided years ago by the Chicago Park District quickly drew attention.

"Our intention is to support Kennedy Park pool as a neighborhood resource and create an environment where patrons are comfortable when they enjoy their summer days at the pool,” Carney said.

The 95th Street Beverly Hills Business Association agreed to partner with the group in an effort to solicit funds from area businesses and families interested in a tax-deductable donation, according to the campaign organizers.

Any additional funds will be used to build an awning near the shallow end of the pool to provide shade as well as a space for lap swimmers keep their towels and other items out of the rain.

The council's next meeting is set for 7 p.m. April 26 in the field house at Kennedy Park. For more information, contact Carney at carlycarney@mac.com.
