COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An Auburn Gresham family was attacked Sunday by a suburban man who'd been lying in wait inside the family's car, prosecutors said.

Shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday, a 45-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter left the family home in the 6800 block of South Sangamon Street and got into their 2014 Kia, authorities say.

Since the car windows were fogged from the inside, the mom started to wipe down the front window, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said during a bond hearing Tuesday.

That's when a hooded man sat up in the backseat and said, "Give me the money," according to a police report.

The mother and daughter began to scream and jumped out of the car, prosecutors said. As the 13-year-old girl ran to find her father for help, 19-year-old David Battle chased the mom, knocking her to the ground, authorities said.

Battle, of suburban Glenview, is accused of choking the mother and punching her multiple times.

The woman's husband soon appeared, and along with a good Samaritan neighbor, grabbed Battle and held him down until police arrived, court records show.

Battle is charged with attempted robbery and aggravated battery in a public place.

According to Assistant Public Defender Megan Tomlinson, Battle is a student at the University of Illinois in Chicago and has no prior criminal history.

Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. on Tuesday set bail at $200,000.
