CHICAGO — Mary Tyler Moore, the famed actress and activist "known to turn the world on with her smile," died at the age of 80 Wednesday. But her legacy on and off the screen will remain — even here in Chicago.

Best known for her portrayal of Laura Petrie on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" from 1961-66 and a fictionalized version of herself on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" from 1970-77, Moore became a radical symbol of a single working woman's place in the world for the time.

In 1997, then-Chicagoan Oprah Winfrey invited Moore on her talk show and played Moore in a recreation of the famous opening scene from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

Throughout her stage and film career, Moore also dedicated herself to a number of causes, including acting as the international chairman of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and supporting animal rights.
