CHICAGO — An off-duty suburban police officer shot and killed a 20-year-old man in West Pullman on Friday, police said.

About 6:50 a.m., the officer was walking toward his car, which was parked in the 12300 block of South Wallace Steet, when a man with a gun confronted him and tried to rob him, Chicago Police said.

During the robbery, the officer took out his gun and shot the man, police said.

The man had taken the officer's car keys and was trying to get into the car when the officer, of Robbins, fired shots, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, and investigators found a gun.

Joshua Jones, of the 12200 block of South Lowe, was pronounced dead at 7:02 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. An autopsy showed he died from a gunshot wound in his back in a homicide.

The officer was not wounded, police said, and Chicago detectives were investigating.
