UPTOWN — A 36-year-old man was shot outside of Uplift High School Tuesday evening, police said.

Around 6:10 p.m., the man was walking in the 900 block of West Wilson Avenue when he heard gunshots and felt pain in his leg, police said.

One man who witnessed the shooting was heading west on Wilson Avenue after leaving work at Heartland Health Center's clinic at the high school when he heard a "barrage" of gunshots, forcing him to take cover.

"I heard one guy scream and offered to help, but someone yelled 'he's OK,'" said the man, who asked not to be named.

After the shots stopped, he ran to Sheridan, where a bus was waiting, and called police, he said.

The man who was shot was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where details about his condition were not available, but he was described as "stable," police said.

Tuesday's shooting marks the third Uptown shooting of 2017.

At 4:25 a.m. on New Year's Day, Maurice Delaney, 38, and Ali Mohamed, 31, fatally shot each other after having an early morning confrontation at Iyanze, 4623 N. Broadway, police said.

Following that shooting, the restaurant known for its West African cuisine was shut down indefinitely under the city's problem bar ordinance.
