Black Ensemble Theater To Host Martin Luther King Day Celebration

UPTOWN — The Black Ensemble Theater will team up with the African-American Arts Alliance of Chicago for a Martin Luther King Day celebration featuring dance, music, spoken word and excerpts from the civil rights leader's "most potent speeches."

At 6 p.m. Monday, the theater at 4450 N. Clark St. will host the sixth annual Martin Luther King Day celebration "And A Child Shall Lead Them," which is directed by Jackie Taylor, founder of the theater, and curated by Sydney Chapman, according to a news release for the event.

The event "will highlight youth and their cultural contributions in keeping Dr. King's dream alive." It will feature youth performers along with performances from Black Ensemble Theater talent including Shari Addison, Rhonda Preston, Andre Teamer and Yahdina Udeen, the release said.

Youth performers include the Rebirth Reborn Ensemble, M.A.D.D. Rhythms, Professional Theater and Dance Youth, C Major 7 Music of Chicago, the Tofu Chitlin' Circuit and the Red Clay Dance Youth Ensemble.

The Rebirth Reborn Ensemble a group of young poets from elementary and high school students. The group won the 2016 Louder Than A Bomb high school and elementary school competition, according to the release.
