MORGAN PARK — A large house in Morgan Park caught fire Friday, filling the air with thick, black smoke on a frigid day.

Vincent Griffin stood outside the home at 11661 S. Western Ave. around 1 p.m., seemingly in shock as firefighters swarmed his property. He said no one was hurt in the blaze that seemed to have started in an attached rear garage.

Griffin said his two sons — who looked to be about 12 years old — were home when the fire began and called the Chicago Fire Department. Roughly 10 fire trucks arrived on the scene along with several ambulances and other emergency personnel.

Traffic was blocked on Western Avenue in both directions as firefighters battled the blaze.

Griffin said there was an electric heater in the garage, which he theorized may have started the fire. A fire department chief on the scene would not comment on the cause of the fire, beyond saying it was "all under investigation."

The two boys wept beside their mother as they looked up at the house. They feared their family dog was likely killed in the fire as their pet was last seen near the garage.

One of the many ice-covered firefighters on the scene said dog was likely dead. He also said the garage fire spread quickly to the upper floors of the house. Firefighters sprayed gallons of water, broke windows and cut holes in the roof to put out the blaze.

The fire was largely extinguished by 2 p.m.
