CHICAGO — A bank robber led FBI agents on a chase underground and onto subway tracks, officials said.

On Jan. 9, 2015, a man wearing an orange safety vest and yellow construction hat robbed the Belmont Bank and Trust, 121 W. Wacker Drive, according to a criminal complaint. The man went into the bank, walked up to a teller and said, "Open the vault and door now. Look down at what I got," while holding a silver handgun.

The man said he wanted $100 bills, but the teller said he couldn't access those, officials said.

"Don't worry. I will be back for you," the man replied, according to the complaint.

The teller took money — which included a tracking device — from his drawer and gave it to the thief, officials said. The man left and bank employees pushed their alarms and called 911.

Law enforcement officers responded to the robbery and received updates on the location of the tracking device that was in the money given to the man, officials said.

The officers saw a man who met the description of the thief just 10 minutes after the bank robbery and began chasing the man, who was running southbound on State Street near Monroe Street, officials said.

The officers chased the man and followed him underground to a CTA Red Line platform at 121 S. State St., officials said. The officers followed the man onto the subway tracks, where they caught him and took him into custody.

Officers searched the man and found he had a stainless steel revolver tucked into his waistband and a bag with a yellow construction hat, orange vest, bills that added up to $3,220 and the tracking device from the bank, officials said.

The man was identified as Alvin Edgeworth, and the teller from the bank said Edgeworth's height and watch matched those of the robber and the hat, vest and gun found with Edgeworth were those worn and used by the bank robber, officials said.

Edgeworth was charged and his trial is scheduled to start on Tuesday.
