UPTOWN — After a well-received khantoke dinner during October's Second Fridays on Argyle, Immm Rice & Beyond is hoping to make the event a regular tradition.

Starting Friday, the restaurant at 4949 N. Broadway will host a Lanna khantoke dinner series every other month, according to owner Noon Tosakulwong, who said the idea spawned from a customer, who was unable to attend the October event hosted by Axis Lab and the 48th Ward.

"We're going to be out of town the day you have the Khantoke dinner. When are you going to have it again?" the customer said.

After the event, customers that attended said they were excited for another and those who missed out continued to ask when the next would be, Tosakulwong said.

Lanna refers to Northern Thai customs, cuisine or traditions. Khantoke is a low-to-the-ground dining tray showcasing a variety of main and side dishes.

"This method of eating transcends social strata, and is seen in everyday family dinners to special occasions such as weddings or house-warming parties," a press release from Axis Lab said, adding meals are traditionally eaten while sitting on the floor.

Like the first dinner the restaurant hosted, Chef Dew Suriyawan will showcase a dinner from his hometown of Chiang Mai. The selection includes a snack, eight dishes, three side dishes and a dessert.

The snack will be Tua Samoon Prai, Thai-style beer nuts with kaffir lime, lemongrass and chili. Main dishes include Gang Pakkard, Larb Mueng, Abb Pla, Mee Grob, Sai Oua Sausage, Nam Prik Noom, Tum Makuea and Gai Todd, according to the press release.

Side dishes include crudite, pork cracklings and sticky rice. Dessert will be Kabocha Gang Boud or kabocha with coconut milk, the release said.

The meal will be $29 per person in advance or $37 the day of the meal. Dinners will be held at 6 and 8 p.m. Tickets are available here.
