AUSTIN — An Austin man has died days after a shooting left him wounded on Dec. 19, police said.
At 12:32 p.m., the 28-year-old man was in the 1500 block of North Mayfield Avenue when a man walked up and shot him, police said.
The 28-year-old, who was shot in his chest, was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead Saturday at 4:05 p.m., police said.
He was later identified as Demetrius L. Newell, of the 1500 North Mayfield Avenue, by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Newell is a documented gang member, police sources said.
