Michael Newell, 52, Killed In Garfield Ridge Shooting, Officials Say

CHICAGO — Michael Newell, 52, was shot to death during an attempted robbery Friday night in Garfield Ridge, officials said.

At 8:30 p.m., the man got into his car in the 5100 block of South Long Street and a man walked up to him and took out a gun, police said. The victim tried to drive off but the other man fired shots.

The victim was hit in his head and his car crashed into a parked car, police said. Officers who responded to a call of shots fired found the man still seated in the car with a fatal gunshot wound.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Newell, of the 5200 block of South Kilbourn, was pronounced dead at 8:51 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

The shooter ran away, police said, and no one was in custody.
