MOUNT GREENWOOD — Saint Xavier University has donated $1,000 to the Maple/Morgan Park Community Food Pantry.
The donation comes from the School of Education, as faculty and staff opted to give to the pantry at 11030 S. Longwood Drive in Morgan Park instead of purchasing holiday gifts for each other.
The food pantry located in Morgan Park United Methodist Church is open on Tuesdays from noon-2 p.m. to accept donations. Food distribution takes place on Fridays.
Volunteers with the pantry help feed the needy all year but demand is greater during the holiday season, according to a press release from the Mount Greenwood-based university.
Those operating the pantry also reached out to the community this year, asking for $15 donations to help provide turkey dinners for its annual holiday food distribution. Holiday greeting cards indicating that a dinner has been donated to a needy family are available upon request.
For the recent Thanksgiving distribution, the neighborhood food pantry spent nearly $10,000 on 600 turkeys and other food items for families in the 60643 and 60655 zip codes, according to a published report.
