MOUNT GREENWOOD — Students at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences in Mount Greenwood will be eager to share their suggestions for holiday gifts at the annual Red Tractor Fair.
The vendor fair from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday is meant to showcase handmade items from some 40 students at the school at 3857 W. 111th St.
The third annual event offers students an opportunity to sell many of the things they've been working on in class and at home while earning a bit of cash for the holidays, said Noelle Coronado, an agricultural finance teacher at the magnet school.
Gifts such as cutting boards, soy candles, holiday ornaments and jewelry will be sold along with student-produced jams, salsa and cookies. Fresh wreaths, centerpieces, poinsettias and more will also be sold, Coronado said.
"We encourage kids to start up these small business enterprises," she said Tuesday.
Most gifts range from $2 to $40, though a group of students are working on an 8-foot-by-10-foot backyard shed that will cost $2,000, she said.
These students are planning to showcase the shed at the vendor fair and hope to make a second push in the spring. Most of the construction will be done at the school. Students will then go to customers' homes to complete the assembly on site, Coronado said.
Those unable to visit the fair will still have an opportunity to look at a few items from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Dec. 20 and 22 at the school's farm stand. For more information, visit the school's website or call 773-535-2500.
