MOUNT GREENWOOD — Shoppers are encouraged to take an ornament from the tree from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at the Holiday Stroll in Mount Greenwood.

The fourth annual event showcases the neighborhood's 111th Street business district and will feature a tree decorated with "Choose Kind" ornaments at 111th Street and Kedzie Avenue.

The ornaments offer simple suggestions for acts of kindness during the holidays, such as picking up litter or thanking a police officer, said Mary Gill, executive director of the Mount Greenwood Community And Business Association.

She founded the stroll as a way promote shopping at local businesses during the holidays. She said pairing the event with the local effort that encourages children and adults to work towards kindness and inclusion made sense.

"The businesses really got into [the stroll] this year. They are doing great stuff," said Gill, giving a nod to the nearby Dunkin Donuts for sponsoring the tree with some 200 ornaments.

About 39 businesses will participate in the stroll this year. Many offer special deals or host events to lure in shoppers.

Several special guest will return this year, including Santa, Mrs. Claus and a live reindeer. But also on the list are the Grinch, Elsa, Olaf, Mickey and Minnie Mouse as well as a Minion.

Santa and the reindeer were the most popular attractions last year and drew 350 visitors, Gill said.

"It definitely seems like more and more people are catching on," she said.

Here are a few highlights that those walking in this winter wonderland won't want to miss:
