CHICAGO — A 31-year-old man shot dead while driving in Englewood on Thursday crashed into other cars, leaving a woman and a 5-year-old boy injured, officials said.

At 4 p.m, the man stopped his car in the 7100 block of South Morgan Street and was letting a passenger out when someone walked up and fired shots, police said. The man was hit in his chest and, as he tried to drive off, crashed into other cars.

A 5-year-old boy and 63-year-old woman were in one of the cars that was hit, and they sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The woman was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center and the boy to Comer Children's Hospital. Fire officials said the two were in critical condition before being stabilized.

A 21-year-old woman who was in the man's car was injured in the crash and was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, said Larry Langford, Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

The man was identified as Nathaniel Lewis, of suburban Lansing, in Cook County Medical Examiner's Office records. An autopsy showed he died from a gunshot wound in his chest in a homicide.

No one was in custody.
