CLEARING — A man who died in a Wednesday morning house fire in Clearing has been identified.

Mike Dunn, 65, was identified by family members who lived at the Clearing home.

Firefighters responded to a call at 8:53 a.m. of a fire in a single-family home in the 5700 block of West 63rd Place, the Fire Department said on Twitter.

The fire was extinguished, and the man was taken to an area hospital in "extremely critical" condition before he was pronounced dead, the department said.

Adam Jurevis, Dunn's son-in-law, who also lived at the home with Dunn, his mother-in-law, and his wife and children, told media members that he discovered his home on fire after dropping off his daughters at school.

"He stayed behind so everyone could get out. My mother-in-law got out and he thought we were in the room upstairs. We had already left," Jurevis said. "He didn't know that and he didn't know what time it was. This is a total loss."

Jurevis said that he got along well with Dunn, who was a retired master printer.

"He wasn't the typical father-in-law. He was a great guy and we got along well," Jurevis said. "He helped everybody. There's no greater gift than laying down your life for someone else."
