BEVERLY — The Rev. William Malloy of St. Barnabas Parish said Monday he's recovering quite well after surgery meant to combat "an aggressive case of prostate cancer."

Malloy spelled out his recent diagnosis and treatment in the latest church bulletin for the parish at 10134 S. Longwood Drive in Beverly. He underwent surgery Friday at Little Company of Mary Hospital in suburban Evergreen Park.

"I think it went well. I am still in the hospital though," Malloy said Monday. His recovery is expected to take up to 10 days, and he's planning to complete it at Mercy Circle in Mount Greenwood.

Malloy was unaware what his future treatments might entail. He did say his doctor had planned to remove his prostate, but ended up keeping much of the gland. Several lymph nodes nearby were removed, he said.

"Everything seems to be OK," he said.

Malloy has been pastor of St. Barnabas since 2007. He plans to retire July 1 at age 70. But he hopes to remain a priest at the Southwest Side parish and continue to call the rectory home — should the new pastor approve.

In his message in the Sunday bulletin, Malloy mentioned that a friend had joked that he might wake up from surgery and somehow be transformed into a Chicago Cubs fan. Malloy is a lifelong White Sox fan.

"God, that would be horrible," he said Monday, thankful that no such transformation had occurred.
