WICKER PARK — The community-funded "Wicker Ice" skating rink is back for its second winter and scheduled to be constructed and filled with water this weekend.

Volunteers are needed to help erect the rink as well as maintain it throughout the season.

Doug Wood, treasurer of the Wicker Ice committee, said the installation on Friday and Saturday could use more volunteers to assist the Iron Sleek Rink installers.

Located at 1425 N. Damen Ave., just south of the CTA Blue Line Damen stop, the 60-foot-wide by 120-foot-long non-refrigerated rink will open when the water freezes. It will be removed on March 1, according to the rink's website.

On Friday, volunteers are needed between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to power wash the rink boards and install the bottom section of the rink.

On Saturday, volunteers can assist with installing the rink's liner at 7 a.m. Around 8 a.m., Chicago Firefighters will fill the rink.

After the rink is filled, volunteers will be needed to unload the rink's upper boards and attach them, as well as install posts for netting and lights. The rink will be surrounded by 100 fence posts, Wood said.
