COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man murdered his sister's boyfriend after receiving a call that the woman had been beaten, prosecutors said Thursday.

Alonzo Redditt, 21, is charged with first-degree murder in the December 2015 slaying of Lamont Alexander, 23.

According to prosecutors, Redditt received a call on Dec. 4, 2015, saying that his sister had been beaten by Alexander, her boyfriend. Redditt sought out Alexander, and the men began to argue in the 4100 block of West 21st Street in North Lawndale.

The fight soon became physical, prosecutors said, and a witness pulled Alexander away from Redditt.

That's when Redditt pulled a gun and pistol-whipped Alexander before shooting the man once in his head, Assistant State's Attorney Holly Grosshans said during a bond hearing Thursday.

Redditt fled and was picked up in a car a block away, prosecutors said.

Alexander was pronounced dead shortly before 8 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Several witnesses were able to identify Redditt as the shooter, Grosshans said. Redditt is also accused of making a third-party admission to shooting Alexander.

It is not clear why there was a yearlong delay in filing charges.

On Thursday, Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered Redditt held in lieu of $350,000 bail.
