DOWNTOWN — A man was killed after getting hit by a semi Wednesday morning in the Loop, police said.

The victim was walking at 10:26 a.m. along the 100 block of West Congress Parkway when he was hit by the truck, police said. The 59-year-old man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police first said that they were investigating the collision as a hit-and-run after the driver fled the scene, but later said Wednesday that the driver stayed when he realized he hit someone.

The truck driver was heading west on Congress and stopped at a stoplight on the block, and hit the pedestrian when the light turned green, police said.

The driver, a 50-year-old man, was ticketed for hitting a pedestrian, a non-criminal charge. He is due in traffic court in January.
