At 12:25 a.m., officers on patrol in the 600 block of South Central Park Boulevard saw the man shoot at two people, killing one, according to a Chicago Police news release.

That man was identified as Jeffrey Banks, 35, of an unknown home, according to Cook County Medical Examiner's Office records. He was pronounced dead at 12:44 a.m.

Officers stepped in and opened fire, hitting the man involved in the first shooting, police said. Cleotha Mitchell, 37, of the 1300 block of South California, was pronounced dead at 12:44 a.m.

One person who was wounded in the shooting the officers saw was taken to an area hospital, where his or her condition was not available but he or she was listed as "stable," police said.

No officers were wounded, and a gun was found at the scene, police said.

The officer or officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days, and the shooting will be investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority, police said.

Officers fatally shot Kajuan Raye, 19, Wednesday in West Englewood, and 26-year-old Darius Jones was shot and killed by officers Nov. 18 in West Englewood.
