Austin Shooting Kills Kevin Shorter, 18, and Wounds Boy, 13, Police Say

CHICAGO — An 18-year-old man was shot dead and a 13-year-old boy was seriously wounded in Austin Saturday, police said.

At 11:55 a.m., the man and the boy were walking together in the 1400 block of North Latrobe Avenue when someone walked up to them and fired shots, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The man was hit in his head, Estrada said.

The man was identified as Kevin Shorter, of the 1700 block of North Lorel, in Cook County Medical Examiner's Office records. Shorter was pronounced dead at 11:31 a.m., and an autopsy showed he died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.

The boy was shot in his face and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, Estrada said.

No one was in custody.
