2 New Downtown High-Rises, South Loop Town Homes Get OK From City Panel

By David Matthews | November 18, 2016 2:11pm

DOWNTOWN — A key city panel has signed off on a slew of new Downtown developments, including two high-rise hotels.

The Chicago Plan Commission on Thursday approved a 17-story hotel proposed for 100 W. Huron St., a 29-story hotel at 1101 S. Wabash Ave., and 12 new townhomes in the South Loop's historic Prairie District:

Chicago-based Akara Partners originally wanted to build a condominium tower at the corner of Huron and Clark streets, but switched gears to a hotel after getting dragged with slow sales. Their hotel project, which has yet to sign a hotel, will include 215 hotel rooms, a street-level bar or restaurant, and other retail.

A venture led by Palos Park developer Seamus Murnin received city approval to build these high-end townhomes at Prairie Avenue and Cullerton Street in the South Loop's landmarked Prairie District.

Richard Simon of United Service Cos. once planned to build a 13,300-square-foot mansion at the corner, but sold the site to Murnin's venture last year after reportedly changing his mind. United Service Cos. is a staffing firm for trade shows.

Another developer in 2007 proposed a seven-story condo tower and some town homes at the site, but the plan fizzled amid the ensuing recession and the property was hit with a foreclosure suit.

Prairie Avenue, often called the city's original Gold Coast, was home to George Pullman, Marshall Field, and other industrial barons of 19th century Chicago.

A venture led by Hinsdale developer Yen Sui-Mei got approval to build this 29-story, 281-room Hilton hotel with 57 parking spaces at 1101 S. Wabash Ave. The project will replace a parking garage.
