UPTOWN — The former Stewart School building was designated as an official city landmark by the City Council Wednesday.

The building at 4524 N. Kenmore Ave. along with two West Town schools, which were also closed at the end of the 2012-2013 school year, received the designation.

The Stewart building was designed by architect Dwight Perkins in 1907. It was named for businessman and civic leader Graeme Stewart, according to the news release for the designation.

"The red-brick and gray-limestone trim building serves as a fine example of an early transitional Prairie Style building that echoes 19th century Revival styles with a pitched roof and wide, bracketed, and copper-clad eaves," the release said.

It was bought by Morningside Equities in 2015 for $5.1 million and will be redeveloped to include residential housing, retail and possibly restaurant space.

It will have five floors and a green roof. The first floor will accommodate access for people with disabilities and the Affordable Requirements Ordinance “does not kick in for this development," Ald. James Cappleman has said.

In West Town, the former Peabody School, 1444 W. Augusta Blvd. and Near North School, 739 N. Ada St. received the designation.
