CHICAGO — A shooting in Back of the Yards left Elijah Murphy, 38, dead early Thursday, officials said.

At 4:45 a.m., the man was getting out of a car in the 4200 block of South Racine Avenue when someone in a dark-colored SUV fired shots at him, police said.

The man was hit multiple times in his head and body and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Murphy, of the 5700 block of South Bishop Street, was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. He was pronounced dead at 5:12 a.m.

No one was in custody.

The Sun-Times reported that the man was being dropped off at a meat packaging plant by his 20-year-old daughter at the time of the shooting. The victim was the father of four and his daughter was pregnant.

"He's a family man, he works every day. He comes home every day," a sister of the victim told the paper.

The plant manager told ABC7 said the victim was a dependable employee who worked at the City Foods plant for five to six years.
