BUCKTOWN/WICKER PARK — A woman headed to work Monday morning was hit in her head by a mugger who stole her phone in Bucktown/Wicker Park, according to police and witnesses.

At 6:24 a.m. Monday, neighbors say they awoke to a woman screaming. They rushed outside to the intersection of Wabansia and Claremont avenues.

Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago Police spokeswoman said the 23-year-old woman was walking north in the 1600 block of North Claremont Avenue when a man came from behind and pushed her to the ground.

The man struck the victim in her head and fled with her belongings, Trainor said.

The mugger was described as a black man with dreadlocks, wearing a black sweatshirt and black sweatpants, police said. A witness said he was at least 5-foot-8.

The woman was taken to St. Mary's hospital in good condition with a small cut to her upper lip. No offender was in custody, police said.

A witness said he awoke to screams and rushed outside.

"She was conscious and talking. She had a cut on her face and was shaken up," the witness said.

The witness said the victim told him that she was going to work at the time of the attack.

The witness said the woman's iPhone 6S, in a lavender case, was stolen but her purse and wallet were not taken in the attack.

"It is the second time it happened on the block, someone was held up at gunpoint on Friday night in front of the Clocktower loft building. Now that it happened in front of my house, it's getting a little too close for comfort," said the witness, who has lived on the street for almost six years.
