COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A 23-year-old man has been charged with murdering Byron Walker in Englewood in September.

According to prosecutors, Rico Jackson, 23, was the gunman in a drive-by shooting that happened about 2:40 p.m. Sept. 29 in the 1100 block of West 57th Street.

Walker and a witness were standing outside a liquor store when a 2010 Chevy Impala circled the block before stopping in front of the store, Assistant State's Bryan Grissman said during a bond hearing Monday.

That's when Jackson stepped out of the car and fatally shot Walker multiple times, prosecutors said. According to Grissman, the men did not know one another.

Police in the area began to chase the Chevy Impala, prosecutors said. At one point, when officers lost sight of the car, Jackson got out of the vehicle and fled on foot, Grissman noted.

Officers soon arrested the car's driver, who in a videotaped statement named Jackson as the shooter, prosecutors said.

Jackson is charged with first-degree murder. According to his public defender, Jackson works for a temp agency and has three daughters, ages 1, 2 and 4.

Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil on Monday denied Jackson bail.
