Driver Ticketed After Boy, 2, Struck By Car In Jefferson Park, Police Say

CHICAGO — A 2-year-old boy died and a 39-year-old woman was injured after they were struck by a cargo van next to the Jefferson Park Jewel-Osco supermarket, police and witnesses said.

At 4:11 p.m., the driver was making a left turn from Giddings Street onto Central Avenue when they hit the boy and woman, who were crossing Central, according to Officer Michelle Tannehill, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The boy was pronounced dead on scene, police said.

The woman was taken to Lutheran General Hospital, where she was treated for "non-life threatening injuries," Tannehill said.

"Everyone was stopped, and the girl was just lying there with a lady trying to give her CPR," according to a man who was driving when he came upon the scene of the collision. "It was just really surreal, really sad. It really brought it home for me how I need to make sure my kids know about traffic safety."

An ambulance didn't arrive for "at least 10 minutes," added the man, who declined to say his name.

The driver was taken into custody and was later issued five tickets for the crash, said Officer Laura Amezaga, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. The driver did not appear to be impaired, she said.

Police said Monday night "the investigation is still ongoing and Detectives are trying to obtain as much information (video, additional witnesses) as they can."
