CHICAGO — A student found a camera in a bathroom at a West Elsdon school, police said.

About 9 a.m. Tuesday, police learned a student found the device inside a bathroom in the 4000 block of West 56 Street, said Officer Laura Amezaga, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman. Detectives were investigating.

The camera was found at John Hancock College Prep, 4034 W. 56th St., according to various news reports.

In a letter to parents, Hancock Principal Karen Boran said no other cameras had been found after searching the school's bathrooms and locker rooms, and officials were "confident that no images have been transmitted."

"This is an upsetting situation for our students and staff, which is why members of the CPS Crisis Intervention team were at school [Tuesday] to provide assistance," Boran wrote in the letter.

Hancock is a neighborhood school with a selective-enrollment program. Some 885 students, primarily from the Far Southwest Side, attend the school.

In September, a camera was found in a staff bathroom at Ogden International School, 24 W. Walton St. A teacher, Elliott Nott,  was charged with hiding the camera in that case.
