RIVER NORTH — A gathering that Chicago Hillary Clinton supporters had hoped to be a celebration party turned into a long and tense evening as results from around the country showed Donald Trump leading for much of the night.

Over 500 Hillary Clinton fans had convened at Moe's Cantina, 155 W. Kinzie St. on Tuesday night hoping to celebrate a historic victory for the Democratic nominee for president. The crowd included politicians such as Mayor Rahm Emanuel and attorney general Lisa Madigan, plus Clinton fans from the city and suburbs.

Around midnight, some of those in the crowd could be seen weeping and the mood was somber.

"I feel disillusioned and like I don't know my country as much as I thought I did four hours ago," said Ukrainian Village's Tom Hellmuth, who came with his girlfriend Hannah Berger-Butler.

"I'm scared for my rights and my friend's rights," said Berger-Butler. "I'm very feminist and I'm scared that a person who is so clearly misogynistic is possibly becoming president and making it okay to say what he is saying."

"It's a little shocking seeing the first couple of states," said Elisa Machlitt, 21, a student at Loyola University Chicago.

Machlitt and friends Sophie Sissi and Emma Seale, both 22, had expected at least one of the Dakotas to break for Clinton, but Trump won both.

"Do we want this explosive personality?" Seale asked of Trump. "It scares me to my core."

"This means everything. If we win, we have hope for the future. If we lose, we are targeted and ostracized as Latinos," said Jennifer Aguiler.

Aguilar, 28, a Little Village resident came with four of her childhood friends. They had expected to leave around 9 p.m. or 10 p.m.

"We did not expect to still be here at midnight," said one of her friends, Jose Guerro, shaking his head. He said a Trump presidency, if Clinton does not bounce back in the race, "would feel like a personal attack."

Liz Kling of Elmhurst drained her wine glass when Trump was projected to be the winner of Florida.

"It's terrible. I'm shocked. This is not at all what any of us predicted," said Kling.
