Walter Payton Students Speak Out Against Racism In Mount Greenwood

By Kelly Bauer | November 8, 2016 7:08pm

CHICAGO — Students at Walter Payton College Prep spoke out against racism in Mount Greenwood following a police-involved shooting and tense protest.

Standing in a hallway, the students, who were led by the school's Black Student Union, talked about the Mount Greenwood protest. During that weekend protest, people yelled slurred at black activists, who were speaking out against the shooting of Joshua Beal. Activists were also told to "go home."

One of the Walter Payton students quoted a text message from a Marist High School student who wrote "I F------ HATE N------" over the weekend. A picture of the tweet — along with responses, including someone replying "same" — went viral and Marist said it was "devastated" by what the students had written.

After reading the text, the students clasped hands and chanted.

"It is our duty to fight for our freedom! It is our duty to win!" the students chanted as they held hands and stood in a circle. "We must love each other and support each other! We have nothing to lose but our chains!"

Archbishop Blase Cupich has also spoken out against racism after the viral text, telling residents on Tuesday that racism is a sin.
