EDGEWATER — A warm, sunny Saturday afternoon in Edgewater was interrupted by a car crash and shooting, police and witnesses said.

Police stated they were still trying to gather initial information, but confirmed that an adult man was shot in his leg near the corner of Sheridan Road and Thorndale Avenue, said Officer Kevin Quaid, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The man was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in "good" condition. Police did not immediately have further details.

Around 2 p.m. Noel Sierra, an Edgewater resident who was out walking his dog, said he first heard several gunshots in succession and then saw a car smash into the fence at the northwest corner of Sheridan and Thorndale.

"I was just out minding my own businesses when I heard pop, pop, pop," Sierra said, adding that at least 10 people were out near the corner at the time.

A man wearing black got out and ran southbound on Sheridan Road until Sierra could no longer see him, Sierra said.

"He took off like a bat out of hell," Sierra said.

More people also got out of the car, but then got back in, drove a few feet around the corner heading east on Thorndale, and crashed further in front of the Colvin House's driveway, Sierra said. The Colvin House is a historic landmark currently undergoing renovations.

A black, four-door sedan could be seen crashed in front of the driveway with damage to the driver's side front and back, in addition to a crushed fence at the corner of Sheridan and Thorndale.

Sierra said he then heard a second burst of shots. Other neighbors also reported hearing two rounds of gunshots.

By 2:30 p.m., curious neighbors and some witnesses had gathered outside the scene.

Police were taping off a portion of Thorndale at Sheridan.

Police and emergency responders were also investigating the alleyway between the Colvin House and adjacent apartment buildings, and were also seen going into an apartment building in the 6000 block of North Kenmore Avenue.
