BEVERLY — Lawns throughout Chicago may look a little less lustrous next summer.

Under a measure introduced by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Chicago homeowners would not be allowed to water their lawns on consecutive days between May 15 and Sept. 15 in an effort to save water.

The measure exempts newly seeded lawns or freshly laid sod for 90 days.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources asked the city to bring its regulations in line with state law, city officials said.

Lawn watering is permitted in Chicago from 5 to 8 a.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Less water is lost to evaporation when it is cooler, officials said.

City officials caution residents to use water "sensibly to avoid waste."
