CHICAGO — Demarco Webster Jr., 14, was shot to death in Austin early Saturday, officials said.

At 1:23 a.m., the boy was standing in the street in the 500 block of South Central Avenue when someone in a dark-colored sedan fired shots, police said.

The boy was hit in the right side of his torso and was taken to Loyola Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Webster, of the 700 block of South Kedzie Avenue, was pronounced dead at 3:15 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Webster, a basketball player, had just turned 14 on Oct. 17, according to posts on Facebook. His sister shared photos and videos of him and said she was excited her "little big brother" was growing up.

But on Saturday, after Webster died, she said her heart had broken.

"Just God give him back to me!" Webster's sister wrote on Facebook. "I need my best friend back. Give me my baby. My heart is gone."

No one was in custody.
