Teen Charged In Fatal South Shore Drive-By Shooting

By Erica Demarest | October 25, 2016 5:29pm

COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A 17-year-old has been charged in the murder of Alexander Townsend, who was gunned down in South Shore last month.

Prosecutors believe Jalen Hibbler, 17, was the gunman in a drive-by shooting that happened about 10:20 a.m. Sept. 14 in the 2600 block of East 75th Street.

Townsend, 18, was walking with a 16-year-old friend when a black Dodge Avenger drove past the pair, Assistant State's Attorney Kristin Estrada said during a bond hearing Tuesday.

The car soon reversed and stopped in front of the teens, blocking their path, prosecutors said.

That's when Hibbler, who was sitting in the backseat, fired multiple shots toward Townsend and the 16-year-old, Estrada said.

Hibbler missed the 16-year-old, prosecutors said, but fatally shot Townsend, who was later pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. A witness identified Hibbler as the shooter.

Hibbler, of the 7900 block of South Kingston Avenue, is charged as an adult with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Cook County Judge James Brown on Tuesday denied Hibbler bail.

Police do not release booking photos of minors, even when they are charged as adults.
