CHICAGO — A West Ridge man is facing aggravated assault charges after pointing a gun at an off-duty officer in South Deering Saturday, according to police.

Ivan Ayers, 28, was in the 2400 block of East 105th Street at 4 p.m. Saturday when he pointed a gun at the off-duty officer, police said in a news release.

After pointing the gun, a "struggle" ensued between Ayers and the officer, police said. The officer fired his own gun though police did not say if Ayers was struck.

Ayers then dropped his gun and ran away but was arrested after he reportedly ran into a stranger's house in the 20300 block of south Crandon Avenue.

Ayers, of the 6500 block of North Hoyne Avenue, has been charged with one felony county of aggravated assault of a police officer and one felony count of a felon using a gun. He is due to make his initial court appearance Monday.

ABC7 said the incident began when Ayers pointed a gun at basketball players in the Trumbull Park gym after two players got into a fight. The off-duty officer was also playing basketball at the time.

Ayers was brought to Trinity Hospital in good condition for shortness of breath, the station said.
