EDGEBROOK — Every October, Mario Guerrero spends weeks preparing to scare the hell out of young children. If he does a good enough job, he could freak out some adults, too.

"My favorite is always when the mom starts crying, then the dad laughs at her," Guerrero said Thursday, as he adjusted a life-sized baby doll slicing through a plastic corpse on his front lawn.

Like many of his neighbors in Edgebrook, Guerrero is hard at work getting his house ready for Halloween. But where most homeowners stick to fake cobwebs and plastic skeletons, he takes it a few steps further.

Take the giant fabric spider straddling the telephone wire above his street. Or the Jeep Grand Cherokee sitting in his driveway, currently manned by a crew of possessed clowns.

"I think we can do without the truck, just for a couple weeks," Guerrero chuckled.

"For me, it's all about making memories," he added. "If in 20 years, friends are saying 'Hey, remember that crazy guy who scared us when we went trick-or-treating?' then I've done my job."

Guerrero has earned one of the top spots in the Edgebrook Community Association's "Spookiest House Contest" every year that he's participated, he said. He expects this year to be no different.

But Guerrero is hardly alone in the neighborhood in his enthusiasm for Halloween. Dozens of houses have been tricked out for the holiday, many in unique ways.

Edgebrook residents can submit their houses into the contest by emailing their name, address and phone number to talk2eca@gmail.com. Winners will be announced Oct. 30.
