Ride-Hailing Driver Scamming Customers In Loop, South Loop, Police Say

By Joe Ward | October 18, 2016 6:17pm

CHICAGO — A driver for a ride-hailing service has been scamming customers in the Loop and the South Loop, police said.

Since Sept. 19, two customers of an unspecified ride-hailing service have been scammed after the driver got their credit card information and used it to withdraw cash, police said in a community alert.

In the incidents, the driver tells the customer that their app did not process their payment and that they would need the customer's credit card information, police said. The driver would then request their PIN number, police said.

After dropping the customer off, the driver drove to an ATM or currency exchange to withdraw cash before the victims could realize they've been scammed, police said.

The two incidents happened in the evening hours on:

• Sept. 29 in the 2000 block of South Michigan Avenue

• Tuesday in the 800 block of South Wabash Avenue

Police have described the driver as a black man aged 35 to 39. He drove a car that matched the one listed in the ride-hailing app and dropped the customers off at their requested destination, police said.

Anyone with information on the cases is asked to call area detectives at 312-747-8384.
